Adopt-A-Road

The Anderson County Adopt-A-Road Program

The Anderson County Adopt-A-Road Program, managed by the Anderson County Solid Waste Department and the Anderson County Mayor’s Office, is a litter-reduction campaign designed to remove litter debris from county roadways and improve the quality of the environment.

The program establishes a partnership between volunteer groups, Anderson County Government and the county Solid Waste Department. Anderson County — through its Litter Free in Tennessee Litter Grant Program supported by the Tennessee Department of Transportation Litter Grant Program — will provide guidance and equipment to foster safe and effective cleanups by volunteers who gather litter along designated community roadways.

The program is free, and the Anderson County Adopt-A-Road Program will provide access to trash bags, gloves, signs, safety vests, and trash “grabbers” to participating volunteers. Litter pickup events should be scheduled with Anderson County in advance of the events so that efforts can be made to schedule pickup of collected litter by county work crews. If pickup of litter by county work crews cannot be scheduled, Adopt-A-Road Volunteers agree to dispose of collected litter at county convenience centers during regular hours of operation.

Once Volunteers have completed two clean-ups of their adopted road, Anderson County will provide Volunteers with up to two free, permanent road signs to let others in the community know who is caring for the road.

Volunteers are required to host two clean-up events per year for a period of three years. Volunteers must report the number of bags, number of people, and number of hours after each clean-up event by filling out and returning the Adopt-A-Road Collection Report within two business days after a cleanup is completed. Volunteers must meet these requirements to remain in the Adopt-A-Road Program. After the initial three-year commitment, volunteers have the option to renew their Adopt-A-Road commitment.

All volunteers and group spokespersons must review and sign the Liability Release form. If anyone refuses to sign the Liability Release, the road adoption application will be denied without further consideration, and the volunteer or group will be informed of the denial by written communication from the Anderson County Mayor’s Office.

No litter pickup should be started on any county road until the Anderson County Adopt-A-Road Program contacts volunteers or their group representative to confirm the status of the road adoption process.
