Get Involved

How can I help?

Life can be hectic these days, what with work, getting kids to and from school, to after-school activities, or just work around the house and yard. You might find yourself saying, “I would love to get involved, but I just don’t have the time.” Heck, we all would, after all we live in the “Volunteer” State. But, sometimes schedules and events just don’t mesh, and volunteering for an event isn’t in the cards. There are other ways to “get involved.”

Find something you are passionate about and work a little “volunteering” into it. Say you go for a walk every evening, or walk the dog, or go camping, hiking, fishing, whatever it is you love to do. Next time, carry a small bag, backpack, or fanny pack along, and if you see some litter pick it up and dispose of it when you get home. Even if it is one cigarette butt, or one gum wrapper, that’s one less piece of litter, and every bit helps! Maybe, you volunteer to collect and haul off recycling at your next church social or homecoming. Be creative, maybe you’ll think of something no one else has! Maybe, you’ll inspire someone else to do a little “volunteering” of their own, and so on, and so on!

Here's a bag of trash Geoff Trabalka recently picked up while fishing one evening at Clark Center Park in Oak Ridge... He's got to practice what he preaches! - Litter Free in Tennessee Campaign

Adopt A Highway

Tennessee’s Adopt-A-Highway program provides an opportunity for individuals and groups to take an active role in preserving our State’s natural beauty by “adopting” a state highway to keep it litter free. To learn more about the program, go to TDOT’s web page or you can email Mark McAdoo.
