Every year, Anderson County recycles between 350 to 600 tons of various materials such as cardboard, paper, plastics, aluminum cans, steel food cans, and glass bottles.

The Savings

Every ton of material that is recycled saves a little more than $20 in costs that would be paid if they went to the landfill. That’s a savings of $10,000 to $20,000 of your tax dollars each year.

But, as residents, we still send 30,000 tons of garbage to the landfill each year. A little over half of that, 15,000 tons or more, is material that could be recycled. That’s more than $300,000 a year of our tax dollars that could be saved.

So, the next time you take the trash out, give a little thought about what you could be recycling at your Convenience Center. With a little extra effort, we could spend our tax dollars on something better than putting our trash in a landfill. (aka… a big hole in the ground)
