So your refrigerator isn’t working, or your air conditioner is broken and you need to know what to do with the old one when you replace it.
Well, first of all, here’s what not to do. Do not cut the line to the compressor on any refrigerator, freezer, air conditioner, dehumidifier, or any other device that contains Freon! It is illegal to release Freon into the air. Freon must be removed by someone who is certified to do so.
If you are going to take your refrigerator, freezer, air conditioner, or dehumidifier to a scrap metal dealer; contact them beforehand. Find out their requirements for taking these items. Many will require you to have the Freon removed before you bring it to them. Some will take it as is and remove the Freon themselves. If you have to have the Freon removed you can contact one of your local Heat and Air Service companies. They will generally provide this service for a fee.
You can also contact your local Solid Waste Department and find out what programs are available in your area regarding these types of items. Some may charge a fee, and others will not.
